A Pho Love Story

A Pho Love Story is the first audiobook I finished this year! I listened to it through Libro.fm and it was such a good experience for me.

I started a new job this year, working remotely from home and I quickly realized I needed to listen to something as I worked or I would go crazy. I quickly got bored of all my music so I decided to give audiobook a try, and omg it changed my life!

I chose to listen to A Pho Love Story because I saw a lot of people on bookstagram talking about it and I wanted something easy and cute. A Pho Love Story was the perfect choice!

This novel tells the story of two teenagers, Bao and Lihn, whose families are rivals because they both own pho restaurants. Bao and Lihn have only spoken once when they were little kids and then kept their distance due to their families’ hate towards each other. But then a chance encounter brings them together and sparks fly, leaving them wondering if their lives could be something more than just the rivalry they grew up in.

“I’m still here, you know. Nothing’s changing the way I feel about you. Whatever we find out, we’ll find out together.”

The plot is a typical Romeo and Juliet cliché…and this book has a lot of clichés. I mean this in the best way possible. It is what would would expect from a premise like this one, but it still had its unique moments that made it different from the books with the same trope.

It talks about the experience of what it means to be a Vietnamese-American in today’s world. The book showed a lot of love towards Vietnamese culture. It was obviously written with so much care and love, I couldn’t help but fall in love with the book itself.

So why am I giving it four stars and not five? Well, as much as I liked this book I wasn’t obsessed with it and there weren’t many surprising elements with it. It was still a fantastic read and I am glad it was the first audiobook I finished this year.
