Books I Want To Read in 2023

2023 is here, and I am the most excited to find amazing reads!

My favorite thing to do on January 1st is to set my reading challenge goal. Literally, the first thing I do when I wake up on the first day of the year is log into Goodreads and StoryGraph to set up my goal.

This year, I set my goal at 12 books. It doesn’t feel like much, but I’m expecting to have a very busy year, and sadly I can’t read for a living yet. So I’m setting my expectations at one book per month, hoping that I’ll be able to read more regardless.

Before I go ahead and start talking about all the books I want to read this year, I wanted to tell you about Ko-Fi!

Ko-Fi is a platform that allows creators to receive donations from their followers. I opened an account not too long ago, and it would mean the world if you could check it out!

The donations are small, just something to support my content. If you like seeing what I create and would love to see more, please consider donating. Thank you!

Now, without further ado, here is a short list of books I have on my tbr list that I’ll read this year!

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

I bought Ninth House when it first came out in 2019. I read one chapter and never touched it again 😅

It was very different from Leigh Bardugo’s previous books, so I wasn’t too much into it. I think I just wasn’t ready to read it. I did not mark it as DNF because I knew I would read it eventually, I just wasn’t expecting it to take so long.

A small comment I read somewhere on Instagram drew me back to the book. It talked about how the Dark Academia vibes of Ninth House were amazing…and well, I’ve been obsessed with Academia aesthetics lately, so I decided to try it again.

So far I’ve only read a couple of chapters, but I’m very excited to see where this goes. Ninth House will be my first year of the year!

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

This is another book I added to my tbr because of its Dark Academia aesthetic…and because it is V.E. Schwab!

I read the Shades of Magic series and absolutely fell in love with her writing style! I’ve been meaning to read her other books for a while now, and I’ll start with Vicious.

This one is a fantasy sci-fi book about superpowers and villains! I find that fascinating and I can’t wait to read it.

The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic

This book was recommended to me by one of my best friends. She told me she read the whole series and was obsessed with it.

Of course, I had seen the books before. Lots of people on Bookstagram have read them, and I’ve heard nothing but good things about them.

The day I was talking with my friend about them, I searched for them on Kindle and the entire series was on sale! I literally got the three books for $3 or so 🤩

I’m excited to see how these books go. They’re the only non-fantasy books I have on my tbr right now, so I think they’ll be a nice break from everything I’ve been reading recently.

Descendant of the Crane by Joan He

I purchased this book while I was traveling and never got around to reading it. I bought it in London and have been carrying it around everywhere, so 2023 will definitely be the year I read it.

I first picked it up because of its beautiful cover. The art is just stunning!

I’ve loved other Chinese-inspired fantasy novels, and I’ve heard great things about this one. There’s just something so unique and refreshing about these new storylines, so I can’t wait to see how this one goes.

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

I also bought this one because it was on sale on Kindle haha!

I’ve seen a lot of people talking about this book, and my sister mentioned she wanted to read it, so I got it just to check it out.

I have to say, the description of “Lesbian Necromancer” was all it took for me to be hooked.

To be honest, I don’t know much about the plot of this one. All I know is that many people have liked it, so I’m going in blind but with high expectations.

Little Thieves by Margaret Owen

I purchased this book so long ago! As soon as it came out, it was an automatic buy.

I read the Merciful Crow duology in 2021 and I absolutely loved those books. I think Margaret Owen is an amazing author, and she’s quickly becoming one of my favorites.

When Little Thieves came out, I got it on Kindle. Sadly, I don’t think this is a book I want to read digitally. It just doesn’t feel the same and no matter how many times I try to start it, I just can’t.

So I ordered a physical copy at my local bookstore. I’m still waiting for it, but as soon as I get it, I’ll read it!

Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune

The same thing that happened with Little Thieves, happened with Under the Whispering Door. I purchased the book on Kindle when it came out, but I just couldn’t read it as an e-book.

I loved reading The House in the Cerulean Sea and I thought it would be the same with this one. Sadly, the feeling just isn’t the same when reading an e-book.

So I’m still waiting to purchase a physical copy. I don’t know when I’ll be able to get it, but I’ll for sure read it at some point in 2023.

Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong

Chloe Gong is a goddess. I love her writing style and I love her books.

I was absolutely obsessed with These Violet Delights and when I heard there’s a spin-off series coming out, I got super excited.

Foul Lady Fortune follows the life of Rosalind Lang, one of the characters from These Violet Delights. I really liked her in the original duology, so I’m intrigued to see what will become of her in this new story!

These are just some of the books I want to read. I have so many on my tbr list, though! Reading just 12 books in the year will not be enough, so I hope to read more than that.

What are the books you want to read this year? Tell me in the comments!
